The sharpness of the rate of approximation by certain operators to the identity is considered in the sense that there exist smooth elements such that a rate of approximation (given by a direct theorem) cannot be improved to a faster one. The verification relies on a functional analytic approach worked out in \textit{W. Dickmeis} - \textit{R. J. Nessel} [J. Approximation Theory 31, 161-174 (1981; Zbl 0473.41028)] and \textit{W. Dickmeis}, \textit{R. J. Nessel}, and \textit{E. van Wickeren} [Quantitative extensions of the uniform boundedness principle, Jahresber. Dtsch.-Math.- Ver. (1986; in print)] and which can be applied to a wide class of operators and spaces. The operators here are the semigroups operators, their Cesàro means, as well as the associated resolvent operators.
