The authors study the Hamiltonian operator of \(N\) spinless particles in the field of a nucleus of charge \(Z\). Their objective is to find an upper bound to the number of eigenvalues below its essential spectrum. They find an estimate of the number of symmetric eigenfunctions, which they call the bosonic case. They state in a note added in proof, that this estimate holds also with no symmetry requirements on the eigenfunctions. Their ultimate goal is to understand the fermionic case (that is antisymmetric eigenfunctions), which is the one of physical interest. This is a first step in that program.
