Lexicographic monomial ideals are special in several senses: their Hilbert functions have minimal growth and their graded Betti numbers are maximal among all ideals with the same Hilbert function. The author defines lexlike monomial ideals as monomial ideals generated by a sequence of monomials \(X\) in some degree \(d\) such that any initial segment of \(X\) has the same Hilbert function as the ideal generated by the lex-segment of the same degree and length. He classifies these lexlike sequences, produces an algorithm for their systematic construction and shows that lexlike sequences share some of the nice properties of lex sequences. Furthermore, lexlike sequences in exterior algebras are introduced and studied. In particular, the author shows the analogues of the Kruskal-Katona Theorem (which says that every Hilbert function is attained by a lex ideal) and the Aramova-Herzog-Hibi Theorem (which says that lex ideals have maximal graded Betti numbers) for squarefree lexlike ideals in an exterior algebra.
