The author studies the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator \(\mathcal{M}\) on Lebesgue spaces with variable exponent. The main result establishes that if the exponent \(p\) is a constant outside some large ball and \(1<\inf p\leq \sup p<\infty\), then \(\mathcal{M}\) is bounded from \(L^{p(\cdot )}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) into itself if and only if the measure \(dx\) satisfies the Muckenhoupt \(A_{p(\cdot )}\) condition: \[ \sup _{Q}\frac{1}{|Q|}||\chi _Q||_{p(\cdot )}||\chi _Q||_{p^*(\cdot )}<\infty . \] Here \(p^*\) denotes the convex conjugate function of \(p\). In the proof, the results of \textit{L. Diening} [Bull. Sci. Math. 129, No. 8, 657--700 (2005; Zbl 1096.46013)] and the ones concerning infimal convolution given by \textit{A. D. Ioffe} and \textit{V. M. Tihomirov} [Theory of extremal problems. Studies in Mathematics and its Applications, Vol. 6. Amsterdam, New York, Oxford: North-Holland Publishing Company. (1979; Zbl 0407.90051)] play an important role.
