The authors consider the Markov semigroup \((P(t))_{t\geq 0}\) on the space of positive finite Borel measures \({\mathcal M}^+(S)\) on a complete separable metric space \((S,d)\). The positive Markov operators \(P(t)\) extend to bounded linear operators \(\overline{P(t)}\) on the Banach lattice \(({\mathcal M}(S), \|\cdot\|_{TV})\) equipped with the total variation norm topology. In the case that \((P(t))_{t\geq 0}\) induces a semigroup of non-expansive linear operators on \(L^1(S, \mu)\), the authors attempt to characterize when this induced semigroup is strongly continuous. Also, under the assumption that \((P(t))_{t\geq 0}\) is regular, they then deal with the question of characterizing the subspace \({\mathcal M}(S)^0_{TV}\) of \({\mathcal M}(S)\) that consists of all continuous measures with respect to the total variation norm. A consequence of this characterization is that \({\mathcal M}(S)^0_{TV}\) is dense in \({\mathcal M}(S)\) for the \({\mathcal S}_{BL}\) topology. Finally, using their new approach, the authors obtain a generalized version of the classical Wiener-Young result for general Markov semigroups.
