Several results about Ascoli topological spaces and weakly Ascoli locally convex spaces are presented. According to \textit{T. Banakh} and the author [Monatsh. Math. 180, No. 1, 39--64 (2016; Zbl 1359.54013)], a completely regular topological space \(X\) is Ascoli if every compact subset \(\mathcal{K}\) of \(C_k(X)\) (here \(k\) denotes the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets of \(X\)) satisfies that the map \((f,x) \in \mathcal{K} \times X \rightarrow f(x) \in \mathbb{R}\) is continuous. Noble had proved that every \(k_R\) topological space is Ascoli. The Ascoli property for function spaces has been studied recently by several authors; see the references in the paper under review. The author presents a ``locally convex'' characterization of Ascoli spaces using the notion of free locally convex spaces introduced by Markov. He also proves that an uncountable direct sum of non-trivial locally convex spaces is not Ascoli. A locally convex space \(E\) is weakly Ascoli if \(E\) endowed with the weak topology \(\sigma(E,E')\) is an Ascoli space. Weakly Ascoli \(c_0\)-barrelled spaces and Fréchet spaces are characterized. Moreover, it is shown that the weak-\(^*\) dual space of a metrizable barrelled space is Ascoli if and only if it is finite-dimensional.
