The authors present here the construction of the hierarchical quasi-interpolants, the analysis of the hierarchical space, and the study of its local approximation power in terms of truncated tensor-product polynomial B-splines (cf. [\textit{C. Giannelli} et al., Comput. Aided Geom. Des. 29, No. 7, 485--498 (2012; Zbl 1252.65030)]). It is observed that the procedure presented is completely general and can be applied to any set of bases and corresponding spaces that fits into the broad framework defined by \textit{C. Giannelli} et al. [Adv. Comput. Math. 40, No. 2, 459--490 (2014; Zbl 1298.41010)]. Several examples of hierarchies of spaces and bases that fit into this framework are also given.
