In this paper, a differential geometric proof of the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for algebraic surfaces of general type and the characterization of the ball-quotients in terms of Chern classes are given. Namely, the following theorems are proved. Theorem 1. Let X be a minimal compact complex surface of general type and X' the canonical model of X. Then there exists a unique Einstein-Kaehler V-metric of negative scalar curvature up to a constant multiple on X', where X' is considered to be a V-manifold in the sense of Satake. Theorem 2. Let X and X' be as in Theorem 1. Then the inequality \(3c_ 2(X)-c_ 1(X)^ 2\geq k(X)\geq 0\) holds. Here, k(X) is the contribution of (-2)-curves on X and is a positive rational number if and only if there are (-2)-curves on X, or equivalently the canonical bundle is not ample. The equality \(3c_ 2(X)-c_ 1(X)^ 2=k(X)\) occurs if and only if the universal cover of the smooth part of X' is the complex hyperbolic 2-ball minus a discrete set of points. The inequality in Theorem 2 was conjectured by \textit{F. Hirzebruch} and was proved independently by \textit{Y. Miyaoka} with algebraic-geometric methods.
