The authors consider a nonlinear convection-diffusion system coupled with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. This model extends the classical Ericksen-Leslie system for flows of nematic liquid crystals. The main result is the existence of global in time weak solutions of that system (which is an extension of results in [\textit{M. Paicu} and \textit{A. Zarnescu}, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 43, No. 5, 2009--2049 (2011; Zbl 1233.35160)]), and the uniqueness of these solutions in the two-dimensional case.
