The authors consider an initial-boundary value problem for a nonlinear system of two partial differential equations involving the second-order time derivative and the biharmonic operator in two spatial dimensions. Under appropriate conditions, it is shown that this system has a unique weak solution. A similar uniqueness result by a different method was obtained elsewhere [\textit{A. Favini, M. A. Horn, I. Lasiecka} and \textit{D. Tataru,} Differ. Integral Equ. 9, No. 2, 267-294 (1996); addendum ibid. 10, No. 1, 197-200 (1997; Zbl 0847.35070)].
