This work studies the global behavior of averaged equations for a strongly coupled system in the primary resonance case. The analysis is based on methods which are applicable to perturbations of a completely integrable Hamiltonian system. Both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian perturbations are considered. In the non-resonance case, the authors use the higher-dimensional Melnikov method to develop a criterion to detect the transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of periodic orbits, which are preserved under Hamiltonian perturbations. Dynamical consequences of such intersections are Smale horseshoes and, hence, chaotic dynamics for perturbed Hamiltonian system. In the resonance case, for Hamiltonian perturbations, the authors use a method developed by \textit{G. Haller} and \textit{S. Wiggins} [Physica D 66, No. 3--4, 298--346 (1993; Zbl 0791.34041)] to detect the existence of orbits homoclinic to periodic orbits which are created by the perturbations in resonance. This also leads to chaotic dynamics in the sense of Smale horseshoes. When subjected to non-Hamiltonian perturbations, analytical methods fail to detect chaotic dynamics in the system for either the resonance or non-resonance case.
