The paper derives a Robinson-Schensted correspondence for type \(C_n\). This correspondence has the advantage that it is straightforward to determine plactic relations from it. The results are set in the theory of crystal bases, and in this setting the author proves two conjectures of Sheats [\textit{J. T. Sheats}, A symplectic jeu de taquin bijection between the tableaux of King and of DeConcini, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 351, 3569-3607 (1999; Zbl 0940.05069)]. The main results are also extendable to type \(B\) and type \(D\) [\textit{C. Lecouvey}, Schensted-type correspondences and plactic monoids for types \(B_n\) and \(D_n\)]. The correspondence of the title has also been independently discovered by Baker [\textit{T. H. Baker}, An insertion scheme for \(C_n\) crystals, in ``Physical combinatorics'' (M. Kashiwara and T. Miwa, eds.), Prog. Math. 191, 1-48 (2000; Zbl 0974.05080)].
