In the paper nonlinear, continuous-time, finite-dimensional control systems with multi-input and multi-output are considered. Using algebraic methods detection and estimation of parameter faults are investigated. In the proofs of the main results the method of adaptive observers is also used. It is generally assumed that the nonlinear part of the differential state equation satisfies a certain Lipschitz condition. A numerical example which illustrates the theoretical considerations is also presented. Finally, it should be pointed out, that similar problems have been discussed in the papers [\textit{B. Jiang}, \textit{J. L. Wang} and \textit{Y. C. Soh}, Int. J. Control 75, No. 11, 792--802 (2002; Zbl 1038.93016)] and [\textit{X. Zhang}, \textit{M. Polycarpou} and \textit{T. Parisini}, IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 47, No. 4, 576--593 (2002)].
