Let G be a group of linear transformations of a vector space V. A non- identity element \(g\in G\) is called quadratic if its minimal polynomial is \((X-1)^ 2\). In the semidirect product of V by G this condition means \([V,g,g]=1\). This property leads to the generalization \([V,A,A]=1\) where A now is a subgroup of G. The paper gives a characterization of the finite linear groups G which are generated by a G-invariant set \(\Gamma\) of these subgroups A under the additional hypothesis that any two members of \(\Gamma\) generate G or a p-group, where p is the characteristic of the underlying field of V.
