A new modulus of smoothness is considered. This modulus has some advantages over that of \textit{G. Freud} and \textit{H. N. Mhaskar} [Ark. Mat. 21, 145-161 (1983; Zbl 0536.41005)]. The equivalence of this modulus of smoothness and K functionals is shown and the characterization problem mentioned by \textit{H. N. Mhaskar} [J. Approximation Theory 46, 100-110 (1986)] is solved.
