The paper deals with Donaldson's hyper-Kähler mean curvature flow (H-flow) in the case when the initial data is Lagrangian with respect to one Kähler form and symplectic with respect to another. The evolution equations of the so-called \textit{special H-flow} are studied and upper and lower bounds for the induced area form are deduced. It is shown that along the special H-flow certain types of singularities do not occur. The authors conjecture that no singularities of type I can form along the special H-flow. Under additional conditions, the authors show that the special H-flow exists for all time and it converges to a complex curve. The required conditions are similar to a condition considered by M.T. Wang for the mean curvature flow. The maximum principle is used to give an alternative proof of an invariance property of H-flows, first proved by Donaldson using geometric arguments.
