The main result of the paper under review is the following: Let \(G=G(q)\) be a simple group of Lie type over the Galois field \(\text{GF}(q)\) except the Suzuki groups \(^2B_2(q)\). Then \(G\) is equal to a product of \(N\) subgroups isomorphic to \(\text{SL}_2(q)\) or \(\text{PSL}_2(q)\), where \(N\) is a quadratic function of the rank of \(G\).
