The aim of this paper is to construct motives for smooth (not necessarily proper) Deligne-Mumford stacks as objects of Voevodsky's triangulated category of motives \(\mathrm{DM}^{\mathrm{eff}}(k,\mathbb{Q})\). In the proper case \textit{B. Toen} has shown in [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2000, No. 17, 909--928 (2000; Zbl 1034.14008)] that the canonical functor \({\mathcal M}_{\mathrm{rat}}(k)\to{\mathcal M}^{\mathrm{DM}}_k\), between the category \({\mathcal M}_{\mathrm{rat}}(k)\) of Chow motives ( with rational coefficients) and the category of of DMC-motives (as constructed in [\textit{A. Vistoli}, Invent. Math. 97, No. 3, 613--670 (1989; Zbl 0694.14001)]) is an equivalence. Here the author proves that, for any smooth and proper Deligne-Mumford stack \(F\) there is a canonical isomorphism \[ i\circ h(F)\simeq M(F), \] where \(i:{\mathcal M}^{\mathrm{eff}}_{\mathrm{rat}}(k)\to \mathrm{DM}^{\mathrm{eff}}(k,\mathbb{Q})\) is the fully faithful embedding of the category of Chow motives into Voevodsky's category. \(h(F)\) is the Chow motive associated to \(F\), via the isomorphism \({\mathcal M}_{\mathrm{rat}}(k)\simeq{\mathcal M}^{\mathrm{DM}}_k\). If the field \(k\) has characteristic 0, then for any smooth and separated Deligne-Mumford stack \(F\), the motive \(M(F)\) is a direct factor of the motive of a smooth quasiprojective scheme.
