Let \(R\) be a commutative local Cohen-Macaulay ring with Krull dimension \(d\). The category \(\mathrm{MCM}\) of maximal Cohen-Macaulay \(R\)-modules can be viewed as a ring with several objects in the sense of \textit{B. Mitchell} [Adv. Math. 8, 1--161 (1972; Zbl 0232.18009)]. The categories \(\mathrm{MCM-mod}\) and \(\mathrm{mod-MCM}\) of finitely presented left and right modules over \(\mathrm{MCM}\) are abelian with enough projectives, so it makes sense to consider the global dimensions of these two categories. It turns out that these two dimensions are equal, and this is called the global dimension of \(\mathrm{MCM}\), denoted by \(\mathrm{gldim(MCM)}\). The main result of the paper is that \(d\leq \mathrm{gldim(MCM)}\leq max\{ 2,d\}\). It is also proved that if \(d\) is 0 or 1, then the left inequality is an equality if and only if \(R\) is regular.
