The generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $u_t=(u_{xx}+f(u))_x$ is studied when the focusing nonlinearity $f$ is such that $f(s)=s^k+f_k(s)$ with $k=2,\, 3$ and $\lim_{s\to 0}\frac{f_k(s)}{s^k}=0$. The authors look for conditions guaranteeing that there is no nontrivial time-periodic solution suitably localized in space. This kind of results is derived from the nonexistence of nontrivial solutions with $u\in C({\mathbb R}; H^s({\mathbb R})\cap L^2(|x|^{2s}dx))$, and does not use inverse scattering properties of those dispersive equations.
