The authors discuss the determination of parameter values of digitized points in order to perform least squares fitting of \(B\)-spline curves and surfaces when the measured points are irregularly spaced [cf. \textit{E. T. Y. Lee}, Comput.-Aided Des. 21, No. 6, 363-370 (1989; Zbl 0675.65002)]. The method provided here applies equally well to the least squares fitting of nonuniform rational \(B\)-spline (NURBS) curves and surfaces.
