This paper discusses the system of partial differential equations governing the plastic deformation of compressible granular material in two dimensions. It starts with the following equations: - The continuity equation, stress equations, plastic yield condition, and the flow rule. The results are particularly concerned with the relation between the instability for the full dynamic equations and instability for equations employing the quasi-dynamic (or quasi-static) approximation. On the basis of the results obtained, attempts have been made to modify the normality assumption implied by the flow rule equation. The paper is a nice addition to the development of the subject.
