A fibration \(\varphi:S\to C\) from a smooth projective surface onto a smooth curve is called isotrivial if all its smooth fibers are isomorphic to the same curve \(A\). The paper consists of a thorough elegant study of such surfaces. The key observation is that such \(S\) is birational to a quotient \((A\times B)/G\), where \(G\) is a finite group acting separately on \(A\) and \(B\), and \(B\) is a smooth curve such that \(B/G\cong C\). The minimal desingularization of \((A\times B)/G\) is called the standard isotrivial fibration. Among other results, the author completely describes the structure of the singular fibers of the standard isotrivial fibration, computes the canonical bundle of it and characterizes the smooth quotients \((A\times B)/G\) as those with splitting tangent bundle.
