The authors analyze the finite element formulation resulting from coupling the local discontinuous Galerkin method with a standard conforming finite element method for elliptic problems. They prove optimal a priori error estimates for arbitrary meshes with possible hanging nodes, and give some numerical experiments to validate the theoretical results.
