Various kinds of bases are studied, including an external base of countable order, (strong) sharp bases, uniform bases and bases of finite rank. Characterizations of these notions are given as well as connections to metrizable spaces. For example as a corollary of a characterization involving sharp bases it is shown that a pseudocompact space is metrizable iff its product with a convergent sequence in \(\mathbb R\) has a sharp base.
