The authors study the following problem: is every Eberlein-Grothendieck scattered space \(\sigma\)-discrete? This is a modified version of a question posed by \textit{R. Haydon} [Publ. Math. Univ. Pierre Marie Curie 95, Sémin. Initiation Anal., 29ème Année: 1989/90, No. 9, 10 p. (1990; Zbl 0757.46009)]. Using the fact that Eberlein-Grothendieck spaces of size \(\omega_1\) are hereditarily meta-Lindelöf, the authors prove that the answer is positive for locally compact or locally countable spaces of cardinality \(\omega_1\), and for Lindelöf \(\Sigma\)-spaces. There is a Hausdorff scattered hereditarily meta-Lindelöf space which is not \(\sigma\)-discrete. The paper contains also 6 open problems. Among them is the problem of whether every Eberlein-Grothendieck Lindelöf scattered space is \(\sigma\)-discrete.
