Let \(Q(2n,q)\) be a non-singular quadric in the finite projective space \(PG(2n,q)\). The authors prove that for even \(q\) each translation ovoid of \(Q(4,q)\) is an elliptic quadric. This implies that each translation spread of the finite generalized hexagon \(H(2^e)\) is semi-classical, i.e. its projections along reguli are elliptic quadrics in \(Q(4,2^e)\). Furthermore, translation spreads of \(H(q)\) are characterized in terms of imaginary chords of a twisted cubic. This leads to a new semi-classical spread in \(H(4^e)\) and to a new semi-classical locally Hermitian 1-system in \(Q(6,q)\).
