The authors are concerned with the asymptotics of the eigenvalues \(E_j\) for the Laplace operator in a smooth domain \(\Omega\subset {\mathbb R}^N\), \(N\geq 2\), subject to Robin boundary condition \(\frac{\partial u}{\partial n}=\alpha u\) on \(\partial\Omega\), \(\alpha>0\). For domains \(\Omega\) with compact \(C^2\) boundary it is established that \[ E_j=-\alpha^2+\mu_j+{\mathcal O}(\log \alpha), \] where \(\mu_j(\alpha)\) denotes the \(j\)th eigenvalue of \(-\Delta_S-(N-1)H\) with \(-\Delta_S\) and \(H\) being respectively the positive Laplace-Beltrami and the mean curvature operator. Similar results are obtained for domains with non-compact boundary. | |||
