In this paper, the authors study the Russo-Dye property for nest subalgebras of factors. They establish a sufficient and necessary condition such that the weak operator topology closure of convex hull of all unitary elements of a nest subalgebra of a factor is the whole unit ball of the subalgebra. This generalizes \textit{K. R. Davidson}'s corresponding result [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 126, No.~10, 3055--3059 (1998; Zbl 0902.47036)] which is a result about factors of type I and it also generalizes the corresponding result of \textit{M. Anoussis} and \textit{E. G. Katsoulis} [Math. Ann. 304, No.~4, 685--699 (1996; Zbl 0844.47025)], where the factor is of type III. In order to obtain their result, the authors introduce the concept of admissible nest for a factor which is different from Davidson's definition. The key steps are to construct the so-called basic sub-nest and the basic equivalent projection sequence for a admissible nest of a factor and to generalize \textit{D. R. Larson}'s factorization theorem about nest algebras [Ann. Math. (2) 121, 409--427 (1985; Zbl 0606.47045)] to factors.
