A combinatorial proof of the Giambelli identity for Schur functions (Q1112029)

The authors give the first complete combinatorial proof of the Giambelli identity [\textit{G. Z. Giambelli}, Atti Acad. Sci. Torino Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Natur. 38, 823-844 (1903; F.d.M. 34, 199)], which provides a formula for expressing an arbitrary Schur function of shape \(\lambda\) as a determinant of Schur functions of hook shapes \((\lambda,1^ k)\). Various hook formulas and extensions are derived from this identity, including application to certain skew shapes.
