For a compact set \(K\subset\mathbb C^n\), let \(g_K\) be the pluricomplex Green function for \(K\) with pole at infinity, and let \(D(R):=\{z\in\mathbb C^n: g_K(z)<R\}\). The main result of the paper is the following important approximation theorem. (*) Let \(K\subset\mathbb C^n\) be a polynomially convex \(\mathcal L\)-regular compact set. Then for each \(0<\varepsilon\ll1\) there exist a \(d_\varepsilon\in\mathbb N\) and a proper polynomial mapping \(F_\varepsilon=(p_1,\dots,p_n)\) with \(\deg F_\varepsilon=d_\varepsilon\) such that: {\parindent7mm \begin{itemize}\item[(i)] \(\|p_j\|_K\leq1\), \(j=1,\dots,n\), \(K\subset\overline{D(\varepsilon)} \subset\mathcal P_\varepsilon\subset D(\varepsilon+\varepsilon^2)\), where \(\mathcal P_\varepsilon\) is the union of those connected components of \(\{z\in\mathbb C^n: |p_j(z)|<e^{\varepsilon+\beta(\varepsilon)},\;j=1,\dots,n\}\) that intersect \(\overline{D(\varepsilon)}\) and \(0<\beta(\varepsilon)\leq\varepsilon^2/2\); \item[(ii)] if \(H_\varepsilon\) is the homogeneous part of \(F_\varepsilon\) of degree \(d_\varepsilon\), then \(H_\varepsilon^{-1}(0)=\{0\}\); \item[(iii)] \(Z_\varepsilon:=F_\varepsilon^{-1}(0)\) is finite and each zero has multiplicity one; \item[(iv)] \(\lim_{\varepsilon\to0}\#(Z_\varepsilon\cap\mathcal P_\varepsilon)/ d_\varepsilon^n=1\). \end{itemize}} The author also presents a generalized version of (*) without the assumption that \(K\) is \(\mathcal L\)--regular, and a strengthened version of (*) for the case where \(K\) is additionally balanced.
