Past and recent research on the use of non-reflecting boundary conditions in the numerical solutions of wave propagation problems is reviewed. The paper is concerned with artificial boundary conditions. The need for those conditions arises when the spatial domain of the problem is unbounded and a numerical treatment usually requires the introduction of an artificial boundary \({\mathcal B}\) in order to make the computational domain finite. The appropriate boundary conditions to be used on \({\mathcal B}\) for various wave problems are discussed in this survey.
