Some properties of different moduli of convexity and smoothness in normed linear spaces and relations between them are studied. These relations are used to obtain some characteristic properties of inner product spaces based on the value such moduli take in a point of certain set. These properties are in the line of the following: ``If the modulus of smoothness of a real normed linear space \(E\) \[ \eta_ E(\varepsilon)=\sup\left\{{{2-\| x+y\|} \over {\| x- y\|}}:\;\| x\|=\| y\|=1,\;\| x- y\|\leq\varepsilon\right\} \qquad (0<\varepsilon<2) \] satisfies the inequality \(\eta_ E(\varepsilon)\leq{{2-\sqrt{4-\varepsilon^ 2}} \over \varepsilon}\), for some \(\varepsilon\not\in\{2\cos {k\pi\over 2n}\): \(n=2,3,\dots\); \(k=1,2,\dots,n-1\}\), then \(E\) is an inner product space.'' Similar results for some other moduli of smoothness as well as some moduli of convexity defined by M. M. Day, J. Lindenstrauss, V. D. Milman, J. Banas and C. Finet are given.
