This paper describes a general framework in which one can define linking invariants. For smooth manifolds \(N_1\), \(N_2\), and \(M\), one has a pairing on the bordism groups of spaces of maps of \(N_1\) into \(M\) and of \(N_2\) into \(M\). This pairing leads to classical linking invariants and numerous generalizations.
