Let \(K[X]\) be a polynomial ring in \(m\) variables over a field \(K\). Let \(L\) be a subfield of the field of fractions \(K(X)\) of \(K[X]\). The fourthteenth problem of Hilbert asks whether the \(K\)-algebra \(L \cap K[X]\) is finitely generated. Due to Zariski, the problem has an affirmative answer if \(m \leq 2\). A counterexample was found by Nagata for \(m \geq 32\). Recently, the author gave a counterexample for \(m=4\) [J. Algebra 279, No. 1, 126--134 (2004; Zbl 1099.13035)]. This paper completes the problem by giving a counterexample for \(m = 3\).
