    Using the trick \((AX-YB)\oplus 0=\left[\begin{smallmatrix} A & -I \\0& 0 \end{smallmatrix}\right] \left[\begin{smallmatrix} X & 0 \\0&Y\end{smallmatrix}\right] \left[\begin{smallmatrix} I & 0\\B& 0\end{smallmatrix}\right]\) with \(2 \times 2\) block matrices, the author nicely establishes a link between singular values of generalized commutators and those of a product of three operators and proves that \(s_j(AX-YB) \leq (\|A\|+\|B\|)s_j(X\oplus Y)\) \((j=1, 2,\dots)\), where \(A,B,X,Y\in B(H)\) such that \(X, Y\) are compact. He then applies this to improve several inequalities for generalized commutators of positive operators due to \textit{F.\,Kittaneh} [J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 250, No.\,1, 132--143 (2007; Zbl 1131.47009); Linear Algebra Appl.\ 430, No.\,8--9, 2362--2367 (2009; Zbl 1162.47010)].
