The author classifies up to conjugacy the maximal finite irreducible subgroups of \(GL_ p({\mathbb{Z}})\), where p is an odd prime with \(p\leq 23\). Let G be such a subgroup. The natural \({\mathbb{Z}}G\)-lattice \(L={\mathbb{Z}}^ p\) has a unique surjective G-invariant bilinear form \(\phi\) : \(L\times L\to {\mathbb{Z}}\) and G can be identified with Aut(L,\(\phi)\). The author determines Aut(L,\(\phi)\) using methods which are partly number-theoretic. It is shown that, when p is an odd prime at most 19, each finite irreducible subgroup of \(GL_ p({\mathbb{Z}})\) is conjugate to a unimodular group which fixes a bilinear form with circulant Gram matrix. It is also shown that, when p is an odd prime at most 11, the maximal finite irreducible subgroups of \(GL_ p({\mathbb{Z}})\) are essentially reflection groups.
