This edition has changed considerably from the previous one. For the review of the first edition from 1994 see Zbl 0815.62027, and for the second edition from 2000 Zbl 0942.62049. Now it intends to replace instead to supplement graduate level texts on testing hypotheses. Therefore it contains material on parametric methods as well as permutation tests and the bootstrap. For this, the text has been expanded by 10\%. After an introductory chapter presenting basic concepts and giving an impressive list of areas of applications, optimality concepts are discussed. Chapter 3 then gives an introduction to testing hypotheses. Its focus is on permutation and bootstrap tests. Experimental designs, multifactor designs, categorial data and multivariate analysis are the themes of chapters 6 to 9. Chapter 10 presents an approach to detect clustering in time and space and to validate clustering models. Special data situations, missing data, outliers and censoring, are considered in chapter 11. Then the problem of developing optimal solutions for situations for which test statistics are not to be found are discussed. Chapter 14 deals with computational aspects. The theory of testing hypotheses is presented in an appendix. Many essential results are now given in form of exercises. On the other hand, their number has been greatly increased from the second edition. This third edition is aimed at upper division graduate students and practitioners. The mathematics is kept low, measure theory is only utilized in the appendix.
