Modified block SSOR preconditioners for symmetric positive definite linear systems (Q5959300)

The author proposes a class of modified block SSOR iterations for block symmetric and positive definite linear systems, arising from hierarchical-basis finite-element discretizations of second order self-adjoint elliptic boundary value problems. He uses three different choices for the block diagonal preconditioning matrix in the modified SSOR algorithm and establishes in each case, theoretical estimates for the condition numbers and optimal relaxation factors. Concrete calculations of these values are reported for a general second order self-adjoint elliptic problem.
