    Let \(\mathbb{R}^n,\) \(n\) \(\geq 2\) be the \(n\)-dimensional Euclidean space and \( \mathbb{S}^{n-1}\) be the unit sphere in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) equipped with the normalized Lebesgue measure \(d\sigma \). Let \(\Omega\) be a homogeneouse function of degree zero on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) that satisfies \(\Omega \in L^1( \mathbb{S}^{n-1})\) and \(\int\nolimits_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}\Omega (x)\,d\sigma (x)=0\). Suppose that \(P(s)=P_N(s)\) is a real polynomial on \(\mathbb{R}\) of degree \(N\) and satisfies \(P(0)=0\). Define the Marcinkiewicz integral operator \(\mu _P\) along the ``polynomial \(P\)'' on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) by \[ \mu _P(f)(x)=\left( \int_0^\infty \left| \int_{\left| y\right| <t}\frac{\Omega (y^{\prime })}{\left| y\right| ^{n-1}}f(x-P(\left| y\right| )y^{\prime })\,dy\right| ^2\frac{dt}{t^3}\right) ^{\frac 12}, \tag{1} \] where \(y^{\prime }=y/\left| y\right| \) for \(y\neq 0\). When \(P(s)=s\), the operator \(\mu_P=\mu \) is the Marcinkiewicz integral operator introduced by \textit{E. M. Stein} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 88, 430--466 (1958; Zbl 0105.05104)]. The boundedness of the operator \(\mu \), under various conditions on the function \(\Omega \), has been investigated by many authors. For example, see \textit{A. Al-Salman, H. Al-Qassem, L. C. Cheng} and \textit{Y. Pan} [Math. Res. Lett. 9, No. 5--6, 697--700 (2002; Zbl 1035.42006)], \textit{A. Benedek, A. Calderón} and \textit{R. Panzone} [Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA. 48, 356--365 (1962; Zbl 0103.33402)], \textit{J. Chen, D. Fan} and \textit{Y. Pan} [Math. Nachr. 227, 33--42 (2001; Zbl 0994.42012)], among others. In this paper, the author studies the \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\) boundedness of the operator \(\mu_P\) when the function \(\Omega \) satisfies a condition in the form \[ \sup_{\xi \in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}}\int_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}\left| \Omega (y^{^{\prime }})\right| \left(\log \frac 1{\xi \cdot y^{\prime }}\right)^\alpha \,d\sigma (y^{^{\prime }})<\infty, \quad \alpha >0. \tag{2} \] The conditions (2) were introduced by \textit{L. Grafakos} and \textit{A. Stefanov} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 47, No. 2, 455--469 (1998; Zbl 0913.42014)]. For \(\alpha >0\), let \[ G_{\alpha }(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})=\{\Omega \in L^1(\mathbb{S}^{n-1}):\Omega \text{ satisfies(2)}\}. \] The main result in this paper is the following: \noindent Let \(\alpha >1/2\) and \(\Omega \in G_{_\alpha }(\mathbb{S} ^{n-1})\). Then \(\mu _P\) is bounded on \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\) provided that \(1+1/(2\alpha )<p<1+2\alpha \). The bound of \(\mu _P\) is independent of the coefficients of the polynomial \(P.\) This result improves the corresponding result in \textit{J. Chen, D. Fan} and \textit{Y. Pan} (loc. cit). By applying this result, the author establishes the \(L^p\)-boundedness of the corresponding Marcinkiewicz integral operators that are related to the area integral and the Littlewood-Paley \(g_{\lambda }^{*}\)-function.
