Let M be the class of all complex valued functions bounded in the interval [0,1]. Suppose that \(\Phi\) is a continuous, convex and strictly increasing function in the interval \([0,\infty)\) such that \(\Phi(0)=0\). Denote by \(BV_{\Phi}\) the set of all complex-valued functions of bounded \(\Phi\)-variation on the interval [0,1]. The total \(\Phi\)- variation of a function g on \([a,b]\subset [0,1]\) is denoted by \(V_{\Phi}(g;a,b)\) and is defined as the upper bound of the set of all numbers \(\sum^{n-1}_{j=0}\Phi (| g(x_{j+1})-g(x_ j)|)\) over all partitions \(a\leq x_ 0\leq x_ 1,...\leq x_ n\leq b\) of [a,b]. Denote by \(B_ n[f](x)\) \((=\sum^{n}_{k=0}\binom{n}{k}x^ k(1- x)^{n-k}f(\frac{k}{n})\), \(0\leq x\leq 1\), \(n\in N)\). The Bernstein polynomials of \(f\in M\). It is well known that at a fixed point (i) \(\lim_{n\to \infty}B_ n[f](x)=\{f(x\pm 0)+f(x-0)\}\) provided that one sided limits \(f(x\pm 0)\) exist. The author estimates the rate q convergence of (i) at the points of continuity and at the points of discontinuity of some bounded function f. As a measure of deviation of \(B_ n[f](x)\) from \(\{f(x+0)+f(x-0)\}\) the author takes the total \(\Phi\)-variation of the function \(g_ x(t)=f(t)-f(x+0)\) when \(x\leq t\leq 1\), 0 when \(t=x\) and f(t)-f(x-0) when \(0\leq t<x\), in some interval [x- \(\delta\),x], \([x,x+\delta]\), \(\delta >0\) some analogous results concerning the convergence of Kantorovich polynomials of Lebesgue- integrable functions are also established.
