This paper reviews recent results on dynamics and bifurcations of one-dimensional families of real analytic unimodal maps. By \textit{G. Keller} [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 10, 717--744 (1990; Zbl 0715.58020)], the Lyapunov number \(\lambda(f)\) exists for any map \(f\) with negative Schwarzian derivative. Suppose \(f_\mu\) is a nontrivial family of real analytic \(S\)-unimodal maps with quadratic critical point. By \textit{A. Avila, M. Lyubich} and the author [Invent. Math. 154, 451--550 (2003; Zbl 1050.37018)], the set of parameter values \(\mu\) where \(\lambda(f_\mu)=0\) has Lebesgue measure zero. By \textit{O. S. Kozlovski} [Ann. Math. (2) 157, 1--43 (2003; Zbl 1215.37022)] the set of parameter values where \(\lambda(f_\mu)<0\) is open and dense. By \textit{M. V. Jakobson} [Commun. Math. Phys. 81, 39--88 (1981; Zbl 0497.58017)] the set of parameter values where \(\lambda(f_\mu)>0\) has positive measure. This paper discusses extensions of this result to nontrivial families of real analytic unimodal maps and for typical families of smooth unimodal maps [see also \textit{A. Avila} and \textit{C. G. Moreira}, Phase-Parameter relation and sharp statistical properties for general families of unimodal maps (preprint)].
