Two elements f,g of a Banach lattice E are called disjoint if \(| f| \wedge | g| =0\). An operator from E to itself is called disjointness preserving (or a Lamperti operator) if it takes disjoint elements to disjoint elements. On most concrete function spaces disjointness preserving operators are precisely the weighted composition operators. This paper studies the structure and spectra of invertible and (more generally) quasi-invertible disjointness preserving operators. It is shown that such operators can be decomposed into a direct sum of its strictly periodic and aperiodic parts. This result generalizes a similar decomposition of invertible nonsingular transformations on measure spaces. The paper then uses this reslt to derive properties of the spectrum of this type of operator. First properties of the spectra of strictly periodic and aperiodic operators are calculated. Then these results are combined with the decomposition theorem to yield properties of the spectrum of a general quasi-invertible disjointness preserving operator. For instance, it is shown that non-zero isolated points of the spectrum are eigenvalues. Another result is that if the spectrum does not possess sufficient symmetry about the origin (for instance if it lies in a sector of angle less than \(\pi)\) then the operator must be a direct sum of an element of the center of E (i.e. an abstract multiplication operator) and a quasi-nilpotent operator.
