The paper presents main results of Verdier's thesis from 1963 on derived categories and his later results on duality. The thesis has been originated from Grothendieck's work on schemes and provided an essential element for his theory of duality. Although never published (except for a summary of main results), the thesis has exercised some influence upon homological algebra. And so has, as the author explains, his further work on duality. Bibliography contains 29 items, in addition to 18 of Verdier himself.
