Using the concentration compactness principle and the Pokhozaev identity, the authors investigate the existence and nonexistence for localized solitary waves of two- and three-dimensional generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations according to the sign of the transverse dispersion coefficients and to the nonlinearity, and the corresponding regularity properties of the solitary waves are also obtained. They extend their results to the 2D and 3D versions of some fifth-order KdV equation in the final section. The equations they discuss read as \[ u_t+ f(u)u_x+ u_{xxx}+\varepsilon v_y= 0,\quad v_x= u_y \] in dimension 2 and \[ u_t+ f(u)u_x+ u_{xxx}+ av_y+ bw_z=0,\quad v_x= u_y,\quad w_x= u_z \] in dimension 3. It is assumed that \(f(u)= u^p\). The authors intend to get the solitary waves in the form: \(u(x- ct,y)\) or \(u(x- ct,y,z)\in Y\), where \(Y\) is the closure of \(\partial_x(C^\infty_0(\mathbb{R}^d))\) \((d=2,3)\) in the norm \[ |\partial_x\varphi|_Y= (|\nabla\varphi|^2_{L^2}+|\partial^2_x \varphi|^2_{L^2})^{1/2}. \] The nonexistence and existence results are: 1) (Nonexistence) For the 2D problem, there is no nontrivial solitary wave in \(Y\) if \(\varepsilon=-1\) and \(p\geq 4\) or \(\varepsilon=+1\) and \(p\) is arbitrary. For the 3D problem, there is no nontrivial solitary wave in \(Y\) if \(ab=-1\) (resp. \(a=b=1\)) an \(p\) is arbitrary or \(a=b=-1\) and \(p\geq 4/3\). 2) (Existence) For the 2D problem, if \(\varepsilon=-1\) and \(1\leq p<4\), then there is a solitary wave in \(Y\). For the 3D problem, if \(a=b=-1\), \(1\leq p<4/3\), then there is a solitary wave in \(Y\).
