This paper describes a general framework for multilevel decompositions, not only of Hilbert or Banach spaces (typically with \(L^p\) summability where \(p\geq 1\)) but also for quasi-Banach spaces (where \(0<p<1\)). The framework is derived under minimal assumptions and the characterization of the nested subspaces \(V_j\subset V_{j+1}\subset\cdots V\) and their duals is derived from general Bernstein and Jackson inequalities. With extra assumptions on the projectors \(P_j: V\to V_j\), more precise statements for orthogonal decompositions are given. As an application of the theory, compactly supported biorthogonal wavelet decomposition for Besov spaces is completely analysed, leading to a characterization of Besov spaces in \(L^p({\mathbb{R}})\).
