The authors discuss the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of \((p(t)y')'+f(t,y,y')=0\) under the assumption that \(P(t):=\int^{t}_{0}ds/p(s)\to \infty\) as \(t\to \infty\) and \(f(t,u,v)>0\) is nondecreasing in u and in v, which is a generalization of \(y''+\phi (t)e^ y=0,\phi (t)>0\). Sufficient and necessary conditions are given for the existence of a solution y(t) satisfying each of the relations \(\lim_{t\to \infty}p(t)y'(t)=-\infty,\) a negative constant, 0, a positive constant. For example, they prove that there is a solution y(t) satisfying \(\lim_{t\to \infty}p(t)y'(t)=-c,\) a negative constant, if and only if \(\int^{\infty}f(t,-kP(t),k\frac{k}{p(t)})dt<\infty\) for some \(k>0\).
