Let G be a locally compact abelian group with dual \(\Gamma\), \(M_ p(\Gamma)\) the Banach space of all bounded multipliers on \(L^ p\)(G) with operator norm \(\| \|_{M_ p(\Gamma)}\), and \(W_ p(\Gamma)=\{v\in M_ p(\Gamma):\| v\|_{M_ p(\Gamma)}=1=v(e)\}\), with e the identity element of \(\Gamma\), and \(1<p<\infty\), \(p\neq 2\). The authors answer several questions posed by \textit{Ch. Fefferman} and \textit{H. S. Shapiro} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 36(1972), 435-439 (1973; Zbl 0262.42006)], \textit{H. S. Shapiro} [Proc. Conf. Oberwolfach, ISNM 20, 338-347 (1972; Zbl 0255.42006)], and L. Carleson. For instance, they show that for every locally compact abelian group G and \(2\leq p<q<\infty\), \(W_ q(\Gamma)\) is strictly contained in \(W_ p(\Gamma)\). It is also shown that for a compact abelian group the unit ball of \(M_ p(\Gamma)\) has only codimension one faces of one type, and this result is used to give the general form of an isometry of \(M_ p(\Gamma)\) onto \(M_ p(\Lambda)\) where \(\Gamma\) and \(\Lambda\) are discrete and \(p\neq 1,2,\infty\).
