Two basic approaches for the treatment of second order nonlinear partial differential inequalities are the distributional and the viscosity approaches. The main purpose of the paper under review is to prove that in the case where both approaches can be developed, then there there is a natural second-order completeness hypothesis under which the two approaches are isomorphic (in a well-defined sense). A related property in the case of variable coefficients is developed in the final part of this paper. The proofs combine some refined tools that include the intersection theorem for closed convex sets or the Hahn-Banach intersection theorem.
