The theory of hypergeometric functions associated with root systems has been developped by Heckman and Opdam. This theory generalizes the theory of spherical functions on a Riemannian symmetric space to the case where the root multiplicities are allowed to be arbitrary complex parameters. The construction of theses hypergeometric functions reduces to the construction of certain representations of the fundamental group of the complement of the discriminant locus \(D(z_ 1,...,z_ n)=0\) in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\). This fundamental group has a presentation as the Artin group \(\tilde G\) belonging to the affine Weyl group \(\tilde W,\) and the monodromy representation of the hypergeometric differential equation, which is a priori a representation of the Artin group \(\tilde G,\) comes in fact from a representation of the affine Hecke algebra \(\tilde H(c)\) of \(\tilde W\) for suitable c in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\). This representation is described explicitly. As an application one gives a solution to the Schwarz problem for which parameters the hypergeometric function is algebraic. In fact this problem is equivalent with the determination of the parameters for which the image of \(\tilde G\) under the representation is a finite group. For root systems of type A, D, E, one works out the explicit parameter values.
